Beliefs and membership
What does the church believe?
The church’s beliefs are set out in its own words in Beliefs, starting with Declarations and Beliefs, Part One. They are presented as the church’s religious beliefs.
What is a “Free Church”?
The church explains its own use of the term in Establishing Questions. That page states the church’s position; it is not legal advice.
How do I become a member?
Start at Membership, which describes the steps the church published and lets you send an inquiry. Membership is not granted through this website.
Is there an online member area?
Not yet. The member sign-in page explains that member accounts are not connected on this website, and asks you not to enter a password anywhere on it.
The church’s name
Why “the Only Begotten Son”?
The phrase comes from scripture — most famously John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” The Only Begotten Son explains the verse and the Greek word monogenēs behind it.
What is the church’s full name?
The Church of the Only Begotten Son, sometimes shortened to OBS or OBS Church. It describes itself as a Free Entheobotanical Original Christian church, in Cahone, Colorado.
Sacraments and sacred plants
What is an entheogen?
A plant or substance used in a religious context to occasion experience of the divine. The word was coined by scholars in 1979. See Sacraments and sacred plants.
What does the church teach about sacraments?
The church believes “in the use of sacred holy herbs and substances by sacrament (modeled after the eucharist removed from modern day christianity),” in its own words on Practice and Community. The Sacraments section sets this beside the history of sacred plants — psilocybin mushrooms, Amanita muscaria, cannabis, peyote and San Pedro, ayahuasca and the ancient sacraments.
Can anyone receive the sacraments?
No. The church’s Official Lawful Notice states that sacramental substances are used under an OBS Church Certified Religious Leader “for Members ONLY!” This website does not describe how to obtain or use any substance, and nothing on it is medical advice.
What is psychedelic Christianity?
The view that sacred plants belonged to early Christian worship and art. The church recognizes Jerry B. Brown’s The Psychedelic Gospels as scripture; most historians dispute these claims. See Psychedelic Christianity.
Religious freedom
What laws does the church cite?
Among others, the First Amendment, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA), the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA) and Article 32 of the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Religious freedom explains each, with links to the text.
Does Colorado’s Natural Medicine Health Act apply to the church?
The Act, approved by voters as Proposition 122 in 2022, created a state framework for certain natural medicines. This website does not give legal advice on how it applies to anyone; see the overview and consult an attorney.
Giving, shop and legal questions
Are donations tax-deductible?
This website does not make any promise about tax treatment. The church’s own view is in Establishing Questions; for your own situation, please speak to a qualified tax adviser. See Support the church for how to ask about giving.
Can I buy products here?
No. The shop shows the church’s fundraising listings while they are under review. There is no cart or checkout on this website.
How do officials or the press contact the church?
Use official inquiries. The church’s published notices are in Public notices; they state the church’s position and are not court orders or government determinations.
This website
Why does some text look different?
The church’s own words are shown exactly as the church wrote them, in framed “In the church’s words” sections, including its spelling and struck-through text. Summaries and study notes appear alongside them and never replace them. See how content is presented.
Do the forms on this site work?
Yes. Messages sent through the forms are delivered to the church, with spam protection. You can also email contact@onlybegotten.org or call (970) 562-8888.
